Started Labrador and Golden Retrievers in Wisconsin and Illinois

Occasionally we will hold dogs back to sell as started dogs closer to the hunting season.  This depends on capacity, and how many dogs are in training.  If we do not have a started dog, we are always willing to offer consulting on anything related to retrievers and assist you with finding a started dog.  Southfork will sell puppies on a started dog contract where we raise and train puppies for clients (standard training rates apply).

Southfork Guardian Program
Southfork Retrievers Guardian Home Program
In order for our program to thrive, our dogs need to live “a dog’s life”.  Our kennel is smaller, by design, so that our dogs are able to socialize and be part of our family, train daily, run hunt tests, hunt and most importantly just live an enriched life.
As our program has become more successful with puppy placements, and proven family and field companions, we want to grow our breeding program without sacrificing the quality of life for our dogs.  A guardian program allows us to keep breeding rights on our dogs (pending health clearances, training and evaluation, etc) while allowing that dog to live with a family and be someone’s pet.  The owners are responsible for typical ownership expenses, but Southfork will cover all breeding, health testing, whelping of litters and coordinating with clients.  A guardian home is a permanent home for the dog.
Being a guardian to a Southfork dog gives you a select opportunity to own an exceptional dog as a family pet and hunting companion.  These owners will not pay full price for a dog, and in exchange Southfork Retrievers LLC owns ALL breeding rights and holds the registration papers.  The price to a guardian home is a reduced fee of $500.
If necessary, Southfork Retrievers LLC has the right to cancel the guardian program at any time.
A female will only have 2-3 litters in this program and will not be bred passed age 5.  Once retired from the breeding program, the dog will be neutered/spayed at Southfork’s expense and returned to their forever family.  At this time, the registration will be turned over and changed to the guardian’s name.
Guardians are responsible for all general care expenses (food, veterinary, training, etc).  Southfork will be responsible for all health testing, and breeding related expenses (progesterone testing, stud fees, registration, etc).  Should a dog not meet health testing requirements, he or she will not be admitted to the breeding program and registration will be signed over to the guardian.  Spay/Neuter is required prior.
Guardians will be compensated $50 per puppy OR $300 per litter (whichever is best for you) once puppies are placed in their homes.  It is possible to visit your dog and her litter during the the time she is with us (after puppies are 4 weeks of age).
If for any reason the guardian family needs to exit the agreement, the dog MUST come back to Southfork Retrievers without any exceptions.  Any severe injuries (or worse) due to negligence will result in removal of the guardian program with no possibility of housing another one of our dogs.
The following guardian home requirements are a MUST:

  • Have previous experience with dogs.

  • Be willing to teach basic commands such as sit, stay, lay-down, and leave it.

  • Be willing to socialize puppies. This is very important!

  • He/She must be an indoor pet and never left unattended outside.

  • Feed a premium, quality food.

  • All other dogs in the home MUST be fixed if they are the opposite sex.

  • Provide regular exercise.

  • Willing to let us, the breeder, visit your home.

  • Contact Breeder immediately in the event of a serious illness or accident.

  • Send a copy of all vet visits to Breeder.

  • Must not allow he/she to mate with any unapproved dogs.

  • Provide veterinary care when needed.

  • If you are a guardian for a female dog, you must be willing to drop her off for 1-2 weeks while she is bred. Then drop her back off 1 week prior to her whelping date. She will stay with us until the puppies are weaned.

  • If you are a guardian for a male dog, you must be willing to drop him off for 3-5 days for breedings unless arrangements are made ahead of time for us to pick him up.

  • Be able to communicate with us, the breeder, about scheduling testing, mating, whelping, and anything else breeding related.
